Boys’ Heroes Ultra Mini Album

This was a great project for me, for I got to get my Geek on! 🙂

I created this Cinch-bound mini album for Merijn, the 8-year-old son of a friend. A couple of weeks ago I also created one for his older brother Thijmen, and because they are brothers I really wanted each album to have a unique look and feel, so that each boy would really have their own very personal album.

Whereas Thijmen’s album was all about natural history, with wildlife, animal foot prints and dinosaurs, the one I created for Merijn sports several superheroes and other boy favorites. (Of course I consulted their mother to find out what each boy liked.) The paper I used is That’s My Boy by Echo Park, the 6×6 inch pad.

Anyway, it was great fun to create this album and in the process come up with an alternative use for your Marvel comics calendar  – which of course you would have lying around if you’re even half the geek I am. 😉

Okay, so here’s the video. After which, please take a moment to like & subscribe. And, if by any chance you’re curious about my geeky side, try my other blog, Comics & Gadgets! (or its original Dutch version, Gadgets and Geekery.) And, you know, like & subscribe, or just say Hi in the comment section 🙂

Four Gentleman’s Cards & A Lady’s

Sometimes I challenge myself to get as many projects out of 1 or 2 sheets of paper as I can (while still liking them). Recently I took two 12×12 inch sheets of the Best of Paisleys stack by My Mind’s Eye and some coordinating cardstock, and got to work.

I managed to create five birthday cards with the materials and I still have some leftovers, so I was quite pleased with that harvest.

I tried some new designs, including two “fashion-themed” cards, for which I found some tutorials on Youtube. So, hoping to inspire you, here’s the video!

A Natural History Adventure Ultra Mini Album

Hello, and welcome to part 2 of September Mini Album Month on my blog! (which simply means I’ll upload a mini album video every Sunday, instead of the usual once a month). We started off Mini Album Month with a sweet baby girl mini – if you’ve missed it, you might wanna catch up 😉

This week it’s all about the ultra mini album I created for the son of my colleague & friend, who would be turning ten soon and his mother wanted him to have his very own 10-year-old’s-mini. She told me that of all the things he liked, he loved animals, nature, sea shells, and Minecraft the most. A fun challenge for me, for I had to imagine myself a little boy and try to answer the question: what kind of mini would I like?

I came up with an album that fit the ultra mini album category, by which I mean a type of album that sits right between the regular mini album and the micro album, both in size and complexity. Bo Bunny’s Trail Mix collection perfectly fit the natural history theme I had in mind.
By the way, I’ve shown you an ultra mini album some blog posts ago, so check it out for a Flora & Fauna-themed one.

For your convenience I included tutorials for the basic construction of the pages of this mini, so stay tuned for those in the second half of the video.

Last but not least: during the page tutorial I mention the magnet closure and ribbon pull fairly briefly, based on the assumption that you guys already know how to create those. If you don’t, however, I recommend one of my earlier tutorials, where I go over them step by step.

Have fun and let me know what you think!

Great gift for a guy: Craftsman Chest

It’s always more difficult to come up with an original gift idea for a man than it is for a woman. I find altering some wooden object a great solution! It’s functional, it has added interest because it usually has some moving parts, like a lid or drawers, and with the right paper you can create quite the masculine project!

Like this little Craftsman Chest here, which by the way has its own little refrigerator magnet as a bonus 🙂 – perfect for hiding one or more giftcards. And, therefore, also perfect to give a present together with other people: they can all put their giftcards into this little chest!

4-fold Tutorial: Gatefold card, magnet closure, ribbon pull and pattern pocket

Hi gals & guys, I have another tutorial for you! This, my latest How to video, shows you how to make a great gatefold card for a guy. As you’re no doubt aware we can hardly send the men in our lives a card with ribbons, roses and other girly knick-knacks now can we? 🙂 Therefore this card does not have any dimensional embellishments – but instead a much more “manly” magnet closure. Another tip for masculine embellishments: screw brads. They’re absolutely cool – there’s an example at the end of the video, in the second gatefold card I’m showing.

Also in this How to video, a ribbon pull, plus what I’ve dubbed a pattern pocket – by which I mean a hidden pocket, created by making use of the pattern in the paper.

You can of course choose your own measurements, it’s the basic principle that counts.

Design paper: A Proper Gentleman by Graphic 45, inked around the edges with Black Soot distress ink by Tim Holtz.

Hope this helps you all! Let me know what you think and if you’ll make your own gatefold card based on this tutorial – please let me know if you have any questions!

How to make a micro booklet

The more I’m getting the hang of scrapbooking techniques, the more I’ve noticed that I really like designing and creating mini booklets. The tinier the better! They’re not just fun extras in your mini albums, they also make great alternative birthday cards! 🙂

I’m giving you a little “behind the scenes” action for one of my latest micro booklet birthday cards in the video below (click here if you don’t see it). This one I created for a guy, so there’s an extra bonus “gift idea for a guy” for you 😉

I particularly like how it perfectly fits in one of the drawers of the altered drawer box I showed you in one of my previous posts, turning it into a perfect companion piece to go with it – especially since I used the same Graphic 45 design paper stack!

Altered drawer box – for a guy

Although I may not have posted very much lately, I’ve been quite the busy paper crafter 🙂 . It’s just that I have to wait until the intended recipients of these projects have actually received their gifts, before I can show them (and the rest of the world) these blog posts to avoid ruining the surprise! So, the coming weeks I’ll be posting quite a few projects since August is kind of a festive month in our extended family, with several birthdays and a baby that’s eagerly expected 🙂

Now I’m very happy to show you the second of these “August gifts”! (the first being the Ancestry mini album I just posted)

First I painted this cute little wooden drawer box very dark brown, then I added Graphic 45’s A Proper Gentleman design paper to its drawer fronts – after distressing them with Tim Holtz’s Black Soot distress ink.

Before:

My mother commissioned this project for my uncle’s birthday, and getting to create this was great fun for me. After I was done and had printed her personal birthday wishes on a special tag – adding some extra tags just for fun – she really finessed it, turning it into the perfect birthday gift for her brother by filling each drawer with a nice golfing gift (like golf balls, tees etc)! What a great idea! 🙂

Anyway, hope you’re inspired by it as well. Check it out!

Birthday card – for a guy

It’s not always easy to come up with original design ideas for a guy. That’s why I thought I’d share mine, to give some inspiration. Like the design in one of my previous posts, I took my Graphic 45’s A Proper Gentleman again – but this time used some different designs from the stack.
Enjoy!

How to create a mini wallet birthday card (for a guy)

There’s of course many different ways to create a mini wallet. Here’s one that I designed and created myself, and I’d like to show you how I did it – since it’s so simple it would be a shame not to share! (and it will only take about 5 minutes of your precious time!)

I used Graphic 45’s design paper stack A Proper Gentleman to decorate, since it is perfect for creating a birthday card (or any kind of card) for a guy.

Paper walkthrough: A Proper Gentleman (Graphic 45)

No more flowers, butterflies, bows and blings; away with pink, red and summer brightness – for here’s a great paper for creating cards and other projects for guys! 🙂

Birthday card: An actual paper wallet

This time I was aiming for a “real” wallet – if the recipient wants to, he could actually use it as one, storing his dollar or euro bills in it just like one does.

The color pallet is brown, since I’m gifting this to a male relative – which is also the reason why I toned down the embellishments. Although I did use one flower. I couldn’t help myself, I just had to… Still, I think it turned out just fine, even a bit chic 🙂

Altered wine box

There’s more than one way to present someone with a bottle of wine. There’s gift bags and gift boxes, and then there’s the altered wine box!

Like this one below, one of my very first napkin technique projects – when I was still taking my first steps in this undiscovered decoupage country. Meanwhile, I’ve learned a lot more about the possibilities of designing with this technique, but I’ve yet to alter my second wine box. So, just to give you an idea of the sheer endless possibilities, here are some pictures of my first.

In addition to the napkin technique I painted this particular wine box with a color I mixed myself. Again, this opens even more possibilities. To think at the time I didn’t even know the half of designing your own decorations – and I’m learning still more with every project!

For this box I chose a theme with boats and water since I had a man in mind as the recipient. This colleague was pleasantly surprised by the original gift by the way! (I also put a bottle of wine in there of course) 😉
